Manufacturing of specialty optical fibers requires a modern technological equipment and highly qualified staff. These components are the basis of successful scientific and industrial activity that allows to carry out a productive full-cycle functioning and implement innovative optical fiber items.
The team of specialists in the laboratory is divided into three groups: optical fiber preform fabrication group, optical fiber drawing group and metrological control group.
The main objective of the first mentioned group is development of technologies and synthesis by the MCVD method (Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition) of single-mode and multimode optical fiber preforms.
For this purpose, two completely automated technological complexes supplied by Special Gas Controls are set in the laboratory. Each complex includes thermo-mechanical lathe for the high-temperature heating of a substrate silica tube by the gas burner, thermo-chemical unit for the gas-vapor mixture formation and feeding it into thermo-mechanical lathe, vessel for the chemical etching of raw materials, scrubber for absorbing products of the technological process and neutralization of harmful gaseous substances.
In addition, the laboratory is equipped by the system of external gas-phase deposition of silica glass layers doped by various elements on a pure silica basis.
The group is managed by the leading researcher, D.Sci., Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Eron'yan.
At the disposal of the optical fiber drawing group are two automated vertically-oriented complexes (drawing towers) supplied by Optec for producing specialty fibers in different protective coatings.
Each tower is equipped by the preform feeding and positioning unit, high-temperature furnace for preform heating, a few units for the protective coating application, a few furnaces for the UV-curing of coating, a few laser sensors for the coating concentricity control, fiber tension sensor, drawing system, fiber winding mechanism.
Functionality of the equipment allows the group staff not only to produce high-quality optical fibers, but also to solve successfully scientific and technical tasks oriented on development of novel optical fiber items, particularly, photonic crystal and microstructured fibers of various geometry and cable production based on the drawn elements.
At different stages of optical fiber and cables production the clean room of ISO8 class (no more than 100,000 particles of 5 μm in size per 1 m3) is used.
The group is headed by PhD Egishe Ter-Nersesyants.
Control over optical and mechanical characteristics of drawn fibers is provided by the metrological control group. At the disposal of the group are modern means for measuring a set of key parameters, such as preform and fiber refractive index profiles, transmission and dispersion, polarization-maintaining and polarizing properties, modal content and optical field distribution over the fiber cross-section.
Metrological facilities of the laboratory allows to carry out studying of climate impact on optical fiber characteristics in the range -50.. +100 ºC, as well as testing optical fiber and cables while transferring high-power laser radiation.
Preliminary preform and optical fiber parameters calculation, measurement of characteristics and experimental testing of fabricated items are a necessary link between production and scientific processes.
The group is headed by researcher Alexander Komarov.
All production activities are held in a tight contact with scientific leader of the laboratory researcher Vladimir Demidov.
